Due to popular demand, I'm starting my disabled annex build diary on here. Oh yes and just to get this off my chest first it's all and I mean all funded by my own hard earned cash. Not one penny of help, I asked for help with a clos o mat from the MNDA and have heard nothing.

The build started on jan 3rd, There was a lot of ground preparation before work could start. The garden had a block wall which was going to run parallel to the new extension with a 600mm gap, this would allow access around the build.

The builder had serious concerns about the wall, he thought when he dug the footings, the wall would collapse, after a trial dig, it was sat on 4" of concrete, so I took the decision to demolish and rebuild it.

Today is day 11.

10 x 8m3 skips later and the pictures show the new wall is now nearly built. The builder estimates another 10 skips for the footings and the floor, that's 4000 in skips eek!!!

here is a scan of the plans

Wow John that is some build and a lot of skips. I bet looking at it at the moment you must be dismayed by the mud everywhere but I know when it`s done you will be able to forget all the mud and dirt being dragged through the house at the moment.
I will be watching to see how it`s coming on and the finished thing.

Good luck with the extension John, I hope all goes well.

I'm just getting the plans drawn for mine and awaiting the surveyor as I type this. Luckily we have a 2 ton trailer so shouldn't need skips, and have been quoted a maximum cost of 12,000 by a builder friend for a bedroom, wet-room and toilet, to be confirmed once they have the drawings.

I know what you mean, shame I've not driven my cars for months, I thought I would have to give up driving in march, but I just can't get out of the car now. Are you still driving kev? I'm banished to the mrs driving me around in a Renault van! Not quite the same as my lovely a3:-(

I'm a full time passenger now too, try not to be a back seat driver as we have different driving styles..... but old habits die hard. The new Galaxy is a great help for getting in / out of, not sure if I'll fit the outdoor chair in as it's not modded with a low floor at the back. My beemer went a couple of weeks ago so was a sad day :-(

I know what you mean, adie, I'm the same, I put my Tramper in our van at the weekend, and then had to try and o a Houdini act o get into a passenger seat!

I've still got my a3 but seeing it every day, get trashed by the mrs carting the kids around, brings me to tears - its criminal, I might sell it and buy her a mini metro or something:)

Day 12. Sharon is getting fed up making the builders coffee so we went out this morning to wetherspoons, in Bridgwater for breakfast, it's the only pub I'm confident going in, in my power chair. http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/home/pubs/the-carnival-inn

When we got back there was a 7 tonne pile of gravel on the drive, and what with 2 builders vans we could not park, so had to park down the road. I drove my chair up our 1:4 hill while Sharon walked, and trying to squeeze in between the vans my chair slide down the hill and crashed into the back of my Audi, causing a deep scratch in the bumper - I was well peed off:mad:

Anyway, the build is going well, the retaining wall is nearly finished, they have marked out for the footings, and they are being dug tommorow. Here is are a few images not much to see I know!

John, Darren said he thinks a grab lorry will work out cheaper than skip hire.

jadedjohn
23rd January 2012, 19:18
Thanks j and Darren

I did the calcs, myself trouble is his lorry only holds 1/4 of the skip, so that's 8 trips to the dump per day, so logic is with skips they re on site all the time, so never stop. Otherwise I'm paying builders to drive lorry! And you know what they're like when out, stop off at the burger van, etc...

The builder was a bit peeved he quoted me 6000 to clear the site, that was 13 days labour plus 10 skips. I said no and did it on a day rate, in those 13 days they cleared the site, rebuilt the garden wall (650 breeze blocks) and have dug the foundations! Also the problem I have is access I live on a very tight private road.

We wouldn't like to see you get ripped off, John ;) and am glad you peeved off the builder. If access was ok an 8 wheeler grab is the equivalent of 3 skips at a cost of approx 300 mixed waste, never mind it done now.

Sounds like it's going well so far, Should we call you foreman John ;)

Update day 19
What a paliva, the building inspector rang the architect, saying he didn't think the wall was strong enough, so I got a structural engineer out which cost me 420! The builder had built the wall, and put 9 ton of scalpings behind for drainage. Unluckily this structural engineer said it needed all the gravel removing, and a dry mix concrete put behind!!!!! The builder was livid, anyway I got him to get the building inspector to come out and luckily it was the one he knew, so with a bit of negotiation he said carry on with the footings and worry about it later! By which time it will be too late! Anyway, the wall was not part of the planning application!

The concrete was poured yesterday so we're getting there slowly.
650 concrete blocks arriving 07:30 Monday morning
