    Problem cleaning teeth

    This week I have problems with my teeth clamping as soon as I put the toothbrush in my mouth .I have managed to put some toothpaste on a sponge on stick and rubbed that round .Same wi h mouth wash.Over the past couple of months I had to stop using electric and have gradually gone down to a little kiddies brush.I have one of the irrigation gadgets which can blast debris out but splatters it all round the bathroom.
    Does anyone who have similar problems have any suggestions please.

    Hi, I used to brush dads teeth, I used to have him sitting forward over a basin, and used a kids toothbrush, and it took a wee whiley and gave him rest when he needed to shut his mouth but we got there in the end, because he couldn't swill water around to rinse his mouth out, I used to keep him in the same position and used the syringes and put water in them and rinsed his mouth out with them as the water was controlled amount, and the position he was sitting in it just all poured out into basin without choking him. Don't know if that would help.

    I'll give you a laugh, before I used to do it for him and he was well enough to do it himself, I came in one day to find him with his old fashioned Nokia phone in one side off his mouth to keep it open while he brushed one side and then swapped over to the other side, he used to laugh about it, and the Nokia still worked lol .... That made me laugh the solutions we find for ourselves creating - I have just mastered what I have named the 'butt cheek crawl' to inch myself along my banana board as I transfer

    Hi, Can anyone offer me any tips on teeth cleaning. My good arm is now weak and I can't easily get the toothbrush into the mouth. I rest my elbow on the arm of the shower chair but it sometimes slips!
    My neck drops too.
    Sometimes I gag.
    Thanks,
    Bern

    Hi Bern,

    I used to sit with a basin on my lap and lean forward, head bent, so I didn't have to raise my arm to my mouth. I use an electric toothbrush which, although heavier than manual brushes, it does the brushing for you so you don't have to move it up and down the teeth. The small round heads and leaning over the basin cut down the gagging for me, and only use a tiny bit of toothpaste. I rinsed with a sip of water through a straw. I also put a non-slip grip on the handle. Nowadays others brush my teeth for me.

    Hopefully you'll get tips that'll work for you as oral hygiene is important for everyone.

    Love Ellie.

    Hi Bern;

    Sorry to hear that you're having so much trouble.

    I wonder if you could get something to put on the arm of the chair so your elbow stays on better.

    You can get none foaming toothpaste that might help lessen the gaging.
