    urine bottles - alternatives?

    Hello all

My father uses urine bottles at the moment but is now finding his arm weakness is getting worse so this is becoming very difficult also - he doesn't like the idea of having a sheath just yet - wondering if anybody else also struggles with this issue and how you get around it?

    Thanks
    Vicky

    Hi Vicky,

It may be possible for your father to have a suprapubic catheter fitted. He would need a referral to a urologist for that. It may be that the MND nurses could arrange a referral for him. If not, your father's GP could send a referral.

Trying to keep positive, but not always managing.

      Hi vicky,

It would be good to get the sheath sorted out now even if he doesn't use it much.

I use a comfort conditioning bottle, 750 ml it has a screw top so might be difficult.

He might want to look at Tena pads for men . Expensive but if I know I’m going out for a few hours then it’s very useful

            Hi all

Dad has ended up in hospital after a bad fall but is fortunately due to come out

Unfortunately his body rejected the catheter and he found that when the sheath was fitted it kept coming off - have any of you had this problem and got round this?

It’s looking like the only option is pads but as he can’t move around at all I’d be worried re infections and sores and dad really doesn’t want this.

Have any of you found any useful alternatives?

            Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear about your dad's fall Vicky, hopefully he'll soon be home.

What about a Suprapubic Catheter? It goes straight into the bladder through a small incision in the tummy, rather than a standard urethral catheter which causes him issues.

It can be placed under a spinal block, or sometimes just with a local anaesthetic, and isn't a major operation, so that may be a suitable option.
It does have some risks attached - what doesn't?? - but tends to have a lower infection risk than a urethral catheter.

If he uses pads, do get his GP to prescribe a good barrier cream for his nether regions. Admittedly it won't be great for him if someone needs to apply it, but the alternative rash is worse

                Hi Vicky;

Sorry to hear about your dads fall and I hope he is OK.

I've nothing much to add to Ellie's post other than there are specialist nurses to advise and get you the things that are needed.
