voice recognition training

Does anyone know of any reasonably priced training to use Dragon voice recognition for running the computer. My fingers are getting weak and Dragon has been recommended. I have also been told I can get individual training for £500 per day + £150 travel expenses for the tutor. A very high price to pay , so if someone knows a less pricey way to go , I'd appreciate it!

Hi Tolly,

As the NHS provides communication tools such as speech apps it may be that they would fund this. I would be cautious about spending lots of your own money since if in the future you loose your voice like many of us the equipment would be redundant.

Thanks Barry. Already been down NHS route and certainly no funding. I wondered if anyone had any experience that they could recommend or whether I just have to learn the hard way!!

The software has a reputation for being awkward to set up. Have a look at tutorials on YouTube, then decide whether you can go it alone.
Maybe the MNDA can help?

Hi Tolly and welcome to the forum;

Have you looked at the windows voice control, I had a friend that used it quite well. It might help to buy a decent microphone headset but might not be needed.

"Ability Net" may well help you as well.

I guess it's hard asking a speech therapist if you can talk as they are there to help people talk and swallowing issues.

It is worth asking Mnda connect for advice and they might help financially as well.

Hi Tolly. I use the Windows speech recognition software on my laptop and find it easy to use. It has a built in tutorial and the accuracy increases as it gets to know you. I have a headset microphone but find the built in one works just as well. I certainty did not find it necessary to spend all that money. Philip

My friend did write a guide to how to use this on a windows 7 laptop and I did post it but can't now find it.

Can you write a few guide lines on how it's done, especially the first steps.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice. i do have the microsoft voice recognition but it only seems to work with simple Word docs , emails and Google. It wouldn't work on here for example, nor help me assemble a regular newsletter I do , which is why I think Dragon might be better and also why I reckon some instruction would be useful! However , if it is just a matter of finding better ways of using the computer's own system - all advice gratefully received!

Hi Tolly;

Have you tried Eye gaze systems or Grid using a simple switch or two. I don't know much about them but you can control computers with them. Not sure if they will do advanced systems.
