New eye gaze device?

Good afternoon,

There seems to be a new eye gaze device being launched at least in the USA – no idea if it's available in the UK nor indeed if I want it at this stage!

i am looking at getting assistive technology and will be having an assessment soon with Dr Jeff Morris EATS
I have no idea regarding eye gaze equipment
I know a bit about the voice banking/ messaging equipment but no idea which to go for
My arms are deteriorating and I am now using a soft tipped pen to write this text as my fingers are very weak
My OT is arranging the assessment with Dr Morris and asking for help from MNDa by way of loaning equipment / grant.
I feel I should be advised on what type of equipment and not left to decide between what is available on my own without any experience...
My voice is still ok but showing signs of changing. I am getting overwhelmed with reading all the information and still not knowing what I require / need for the best

Hello Jeanette, I’ve just had a visit from environmental services, not as far along as you, but she was very helpful and set me up immediately with a few bits and bobs and loads of advice and even more importantly a direct contact so don’t have to go through any referral process, so as things develop she will come back with new gadgets (free, supplied on loan), so I hope your guy will have you up and running quickly

Hi Jeanette

In the early days there was ModelTalker. Then came Acapela, which the MNDA like. It's good. But recently I have used SpeakUnique which is very good and has helpful support. I think Barry has moved over to it too.

Hi Jeanette,

I use the service provided by EATS and I find them helpful. They initially supplied an iPad and downloaded my recorded voice onto the predictable app but I found limitations on using the tablet for other apps and social media because the service provider has restrictions on the system. I bought my own iPad and I now use SpeakUnique which is provided free by MNDA https://www.speakunique.co.uk/record
Ask EATS about a button control which requires little pressure to select a letter or word. I have no experience of eyegaze but Ellie is the resident expert.

Jeanette Pearce Yes, it can be overwhelming, Jeanette, but the EATS team will know what will or will not work for you, and will guide you appropriately.

The thoughts of assistive tech is daunting/horrible/frustrating but it will reopen access to parts of your world which would otherwise be lost to you.

If you can bring someone to the appt with you, they can take notes and be another pair of eyes and ears for recall!

Hi Jeanette, I have just recorded my voice with SpeakUnique, paid for by MNDA, and am awaiting my assistive technology adviser to come back and look at best app to use the voice on. My daughter says my new voice sounds posh, and I think she's right! Had to read 300 sentences, which I did in chunks, as quite a strain having to articulate the words. You can choose between different authors to read from. I chose Beatrix Potter for better or worse. It was fun in a way. Hope you get good help and advice x

Hi Heather,

Just to let you know that SpeakUnique have their own app which works with android or iOS. My family thinks my recorded voice is my business speech. Being a Geordie I learned to tone my accent down so that my clients could understand. Funny how now I would give anything for a voice regardless of accent.

Andy, I clicked on your link and it was a UK site with a ballpark figure of £1349 (if my memory serves me). My predictable voice sounds like a scouce darlik since the last update a few months ago. They know about this and I’m waiting on a fix. Lynne

My wife had a demo with this yesterday with her SLT. What an amazing piece of kit it appears to be. Next issue I am sure will be funding but we are hopeful of it coming through as her voice is really starting to go .
