Thank you again - I have tried the optikey software but it doesn't seem to recognise the Tobii device.

I run a HP Xeon E3-1231 at 3.4 GHz with 24 gig of RAM as a workstation – in fact I have 2 of them – both driving twin screens via a KVM – that seems to be well beyond the specification required given it runs in a Windows 10 virtual machine using up to 16 GB of that machine provision.

The Tobii shows up as a system device so it's clearly recognised in hardware soI'm not sure what's going on

As you say I suspect I need to delete everything and start again.

Looks like a job for later this week

Are you sure that your PC meets the minimum system requirements for Tobii to work?

Here is the Optikey link again: https://github.com/OptiKey/OptiKey/wiki It says it works with the Tobii 4C and 5 - I tried it and it works with my 4C.

If it doesn't work for you, I think you should uninstall all of your Tobii files, make sure they are fully deleted from the PC, then re-install from scratch and start over.

By supported AAT hardware, I mean (expensive) AAT hardware and software which comes with tech support, help pages and integrated products.

Thank you – the version 5 I purchased also does not seem to want to work with my computer but I'm still not sure if I've got what I need?

As I said the version 4 does not seem to want to work with my computer either

What is Optikey? Could you let me have a link?

And I will have to have a look at Windows 10 eye control

Finally sorry I don't understand your line about supported AAT hardware

It's up to you, Andy. If you want to buy the PCEye, go ahead.

If you want to use your Tobii 5 or 4C with Optikey, there's nothing stopping you doing that.

If you want to use your Tobii 4C with Win10 eye control or other open source software, there's nothing stopping you doing that.

I manage to use my Tobii 4C all day, every day to access my PC.

Of course gaming peripherals are not 'supported' AAT hardware - they are 1/10 the cost of the AAT ones.

Okay–there seem to be 3 different Tobii's

The Tobii Eye Tracker 5 is not an officially supported windows eye control device.

It is a device optimized and intended for gaming enhancement only.

The hint from the help desk is that to find an eye tracking device for assistive use, I need to contact Tobii Dynavox US or Tobii Dynavox Europe.

There is more about Tobii Dynavox's PCEye 5 here.

It had a dedicated support team, advanced eye control features and capabilities and even works outdoors.

Just a thought Andy, check the Tobii files you uninstalled aren't hiding somewhere - sometimes files don't fully unistall and are lurking in temp files or wherever (use the search function) - then you can delete them fully and download from scratch.

Thank you for your feedback – I guess that means the support person on the Tobii Helpdesk was talking out of the wrong orifice

I'll get my glamorous assistant to plug the thing in et cetera and I will come back here if I need any help as opposed to asking Tobii

With regard to the version 4.1 of the device I still have no real idea why wasn't working – we went through deleting all of the software and the registry keys, rebooting the machine, reinstalling the most up-to-date version of the software, rebooting again, discovering that the device was not properly recognised as a USB device, deleting the device in the list of devices and then rebooting again so that it found the device and properly identified it.

As it came back up that time the little blue lights on the front of the device were flashing but it then decided to update its firmware and once it updated its firmware the machine couldn't find it again. That was the point where I decided any more time was worth £200 for a new device

That's what I use and I'm guessing that anyone knowing how I manage to use this Forum would probably agree with me in disagreeing with you on that - it is a fantastic bit of hardware 👍👍👍

I had a tobii version 4.1 device which I never really got into using because as ever with my slow development I am handicapped by getting things far too early and then not using them.

So I was trying it out again this week and discovered it wasn't compatible with the current version of Windows 10 for some reason that neither I nor the bloke on the technical help desk could fathom. It's a long time since I had to restart my computer so often which suggests this is a crap piece of equipment.

Anyway, I decided to invest in more recent version – the 5.1 hardware and told the technical bloke that Toby about this and got the following answer…."

I understand and I really sorry this device has proven very difficult to set up. When you mentioned you dropped 200 on a new version. I hope it was not the tobii eye tracker 5 because that does not support any assistive use software. " So why else would you use an I tracker? Is this bloke incompetent or am I on the wrong track?
