Speak to your OT and/or your MND nurse.

We also got Possum stuff as in the North west. Voice control of TV, phone etc, it is excellent and staff are great.

They offered a door thing (not sure what) but we were moving so didn't investigate. They did say something about it being voice activated.

You may need to change doors and possibley the MND Assocciation could supply a grant.

    Good luck

I and my mum both have trouble with the doors you have to lift the handle and turn key at same time. And I am the carer.

Tony I don’t know the name of the remote doors system because our Council OT is arranging to have it fitted. That contractor is going to leave the wires for the North West Adaptive Technologies people to connect up.

Before all this was agreed an engineer from North West Adaptive Technologies was doing some other work for me and I asked about a remote door. He told me that we’d need a wooden door to be put back (the Council changed the door to PVC when they widened the opening). But since this the Council OT has confirmed that they can do this on a PVC door, and that they’ve done many. Is there an Adaptive Technologies service in your area? It’s be a good idea to first discuss this with your OT. Good luck. Lynne x

I use a key turner from Amazon cost about £8 but this only solves half the problem, could you have the lock moved lower in the door so it can be reached?

    Hi Lynne
Thanks for the reply. Any idea of the make of the remote opening and closing mechanism?
Everything I have researched seems to relate to a UPVC door. We still have traditional wooden door and I’ve yet to find a remote system that is suitable both for me and the door.

Hi Tony, I’m having our front door adapted into a remote opening and closing because I have terrible trouble turning a key. The door will also be connected to my Possum Freedom device so that I can speak with whoever is at the door as I can now but I’ll then be able to open the door from my sitting position on my rise and recliner chair. The Possom Freedom sits beside me on my table. This gadget was given to me by the North West Adaptive Technologies people. Have you got such an organisation in your area? Maybe your OT could find out. Good luck. Lynne x

    Front door

Our front door is made of wood with a traditional Yale lock. Unfortunately, I am now no longer able to both reach and turn the chest high handle.
What solutions have others found to overcome this issue?
My legs are healthy but my arms and hands are now very weak.
