Putting a coat on

I really struggle to put a coat on and quite often fail.
Is there a device available to buy that will hold a coat for you while you get your arms in?
Now the cold weather is here [email protected] getting urgent.

Nothing I am aware of other than asking a friend or neighbour. I have found that sharing the news of my illness results in many ‘If there’s anything I can do, just ask’. Sharing what seems to be such a simple thing with friends let’s them know how hard this illness is.

Sorry Ken, I don't know of any such handy gadgets. I had help from carers quite early on.

Women can buy cape type outerwear, I wonder if there are men's equivalents? xx

It's the thing |I struggle with now the weather is cold. Also dreading winter vests as I am still in teeshirts.
I had a huge problem fastening the top button on my jeans but found a device that helps with that.
I go for a pub meal on a Thursday evening with my brother so by the time I have showered and got dressed I am shattered. I also get embarrassed having to eat with a fork while supporting my wrist with the other hand.

keno I was where you are and the sooner you get to accept what is happening to you the happier you will be. It is what it is and does what it does. Who said life was fair? 😉xx

I have seen the support nurse who came to see me last week but it will take time to sort out I suppose.
All my life has been dedicated to being independent, right or wrong that is who I am and I will fight for the right to be me to the death if necessary.
I still manage a walk but down to once a day (when i can get my coat on) and I still do my own meals although deadly with a kitchen knife so do get the Worcester farm foods in.
Being able to achieve things does help my mental health a great deal.

Hi Keno,
totally agree to maintain independence while safe to do so.However it’s good to do your research in advance and for example know who could arrange help if and when needed and keep record of phone numbers.

Lots of people live alone who have MND but gradually need help with personal care etc.
Hope you have a support network around you .

Maybe useful to write a list of questions for next time support nurse visits ?Hope you have a lifeline, key safe and benefits such as attendance allowance sorted out.

In earlier post you mentioned you are struggling to shower and clean home.
Your support nurse could refer you to an occupational therapist to see if things like gab rails can be helpful in your shower.
Also there is help with essential cleaning.
Maybe you could mention that on next support nurse visit?

I do a little dusting every day and have a battery G-Tek cleaner which works well on these laminate floors.
There are people scheduled to visit in the next few weeks.
The hardest part of showering is my hair but this morning I put shampoo on at the sink before getting in the shower and that was a little easier. I am learning technics with towels too to dry my back and have to wait an hour before fighting with my socks.
I do find that it is all very fatiguing but I see it as an exercise workout.
