Right Foot Drop 🤔

Does anyone have any recommendations for a foot support that can be worn indoors without shoes?

My right foot drop causing me to trip especially when tired.

I've got one for outside use and wear with trainers. I'm happy to purchase rather than ask neuro OT.

I have recently noticed that my right knee gives out when I'm tired.

Maybe a knee support? Your OT can advise....🤷🏼♀️

My neuro OT supplied the one I have to use with trainers outdoors👍🏻

Linda, I know you're happy to buy an orthotic but what suits A, may not suit B, and that's why I suggest you ask your OT or physiotherapist first.

That said, I used both of these, which were given to me by the physiotherapist:





And, of course, there are other types.

I wore both types 'walking' indoors, read shuffling with a frame for 'walking'. Braces and splints can stretch other muscles, potentially causing pain, which is why it's advisable to have one recommended specifically for you. xx

Hi Linda
my MND in early stages presented with left foot drop and I had prosthetic to wear in trainers.Physio told me to wear them indoors too and not go bare foot.
Guess we have to be advised individually.
No use to me now as I only transfer from chair to bed etc and can’t walk at all.

Just thinking it didn’t take long for me to go from Zimmer frame , stairlift to wheelchair and through floor lift.Now can just about transfer so next lot of equipment arrived to help with that.
Bought myself a kind of rope ladder to pull myself from lying to sitting in bed…it works well for me.

Must sort out the returns of equipment I no longer need as someone might need them..Very grateful to my lovely OT for her advise as I change physically .

Hope you find foot support that suits you.Last thing you need is a fall.Falls risk now less for me as I can’t independently transfer etc and won’t attempt to.Can’t say I like how it is but very grateful to Steve my husband for his support and from sister in law .

Thanks Mary C for your post. My OT from Neuro rehab team gave me the support to wear with trainers....for outside. She mentioned there are supports for indoors and shoeless.
I'll refer back to her with Ellie's photos and take on board your points.
I'm walking indoors with a stick....right foot drop and general weakness, worse when fatigued, can cause trips. To be fair it's been one....in my bedroom with a long pile carpet...but I want to minimise risk. I agree last thing any of us need is a fall.

My husband had foot-drop in his right foot and his physio gave him a soft temporary support until he was given a rigid plastic support by othortics that he wore inside shoes and slippers. When his calf muscle wasted they were able to modify it to fit. He had a lot of falls before he started wearing the plastic one - including down the stairs, in the bathroom and once in front of his boss... that one hurt more than the others! The dogs pulled him over two or three times and he fell a few times at work. This was over a period of a few months, it's hard to remember exactly. Looking back I'm grateful that he didn't seriously hurt himself and don't know why we weren't more alarmed at the frequent falls! It was the first sign of MND though we had no idea at the time what was coming.

After he started wearing the cast he fell only once and that wasn't due to the foot-drop.

Stating the obvious but be careful with rugs, bathroom mats etc.

I had quite a few falls pre diagnosis and quite how I didn't break something is more luck than judgement!
I plan to discuss best supports with Neuro physio....just to make sure I'm using the right thing.

You're right about trip hazzards with rugs etc....my super long pile rug in my lounge has to go 😭

Falls are truly awful and shake up your whole body and knock your confidence. Especially with MND when there is no warning....just go down like a sack of spuds🤕
