Does anyone find this mattress has a shape that doesn’t support the lower back? Although it has helped me with pain at the pressure points on my bum, the relief of this has been offset by worry that long held lower back problems have been reignited. (Ellie I keep forgetting to ask my carer to check the type of air mattress I have). X

You could increase the weight setting on the pump to one above your own weight for one night and see how that feels. It may offer more support.
But, if the mattress itself isn't up to much, it may never be comfortable enough. xxDiagnosed 03/2007. Sporadic Definite ALS/MND Spinal (hand) Onset.

Hi Heather. I had exactly the same problem and tried several mattresses and beds. I’ve ended up sleeping in a rise/recliner chair as it supports my lower back. I also find that it moves me into better positions more easily. My OT wasn’t sure at first but I get a good nights sleep and it’s dead comfy! X

Thanks for asking Ellie. I am learning more ways to cope with the new mattress, adjusting settings, and more medication ,which has further disrupted bowels, etc, etc.
The mattress is Harvest two Hampton, risk very high. I have the choice to go back to the foam one, and have tried with and without my John Lewis mattress topper. Have tried a friend’s topper (I know you’re not supposed to use these with alternating air mattress.) Just going to muddle through with air mattress, feather pillow for my back, painkillers and being careful how I lie. I always have last resort of riser recliner chair like Sarah.xx
Diagnosed July 2020, ALS bulbar onset. PEG and ventilator (mainly at night), and pretty poor speech, but legs still about functioning!

That breaks my heart Heather R, you certainly should not have to "muddle through" trying to get comfortable enough to sleep 😟
Ideally you'd be given a more supportive mattress - the Hampton is an entry level mattress, not really suitable for your bad back. If a topper makes you more comfortable and doesn't put your skin at risk, you may as well because the alternative is pain 😟
