    speech to text

Hi everyone. I am an AV, posting on behalf of J, who I support. He has asked me to flag up how useful he is finding the speech to text facility on his laptop. There doesn’t seem to have been anything posted about this recently.

J has Windows 10, and going into Word, can convert his speech to text by hitting the windows key, then H.

If this doesn’t work for you, then it is worth experimenting with your computer settings. I found I needed to first enable online speech recognition (Settings – Privacy – Speech – online speech recognition), and then hold down the windows key while clicking H. Of course, your microphone also needs to be enabled. There are YouTube videos with more tips, particularly on using punctuation.

Thanks for bringing this up. I have been looking at these features on my laptop recently.
Mine is not set up for your "Windows/H" method (I tried ) so the method I have been using to do "speech to text" (speaking words that then appear on the screen) is to have Word open, then select Home then Dictate.
I am moving away from this method as my voice deteriorates, so I am now looking at "Text to Speech" (I type something, then the laptop speaks it out loud). It may be useful to have some discussion about this too, so I will start another thread.
      Cheers.

DeputyK & J, thank you this is very useful.

I use speech to text on my phone for posting on this forum and sending text/WhatsApp messages, it's so much less tiring than trying to type.

I haven't worked out how to do it on my laptop yet, but thought it would be possible.

Currently if I want to write a document on my laptop, I dictate into my phone & email it to myself, then cut & paste. J's way is much less long winded! 😃

Eddie, don't you have the 'Dictate' function on your home blank document for quick access?

No - While my fingers work I prefer not to have the Home ribbon "pinned" to stay on the document.

WheelsOfSteel hi. With regards to text to speech i have downloaded the speak unique app. The mnda paid for voice banking. But they also have selected voices you can use instead of own. I don't need it yet but have been practicing! It's a very easy platform and has the added speed of predicted text when using mobile keyboard so lot quicker. It's quite simple to use I thought ( am very much not tech minded!!). 😀
Diagnosed June 2022. Confirmed MND. Limb onset. Symptoms started November 2020.

If it helps even one forum member, then a tip is worth posting 👍
