    Double profile bed

I need to obtain a double bed with one side profiled. I cannot be separated from my husband due to not being able to remove my NIV mask in the case of a cough/choke incident. Single beds won’t work for us. This is difficult to get across to OT as they only cater for single beds. Bureaucracy is winning and I am suffering….sleep deprivation for me and my husband is taking its toll.

anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

any recommendations for the correct bed to buy if I have to purchase it myself? I sleep almost upright and need good leg support with knee lift. I also need a top grade air mattress to avoid pressure sores - any recommendations welcome as the one I have been given falls well short and I have bought another air-filled seat that I place on top

The Bakare® Bello Sonno double profiling bed has been designed for couples so they can continue to share a bed at home after their needs have changed.

This is a local company to me who do double beds with one portion a profile bed so they do exist! x

LouiseRaymakers Even if you were to purchase a double profiling bed, it would have to separate into 2 single beds in case you need all-around access for manual handling at a later stage, but of course you could purchase one - it should also be height adjustable and have free access under the bed. You might get a grant towards a bed from the MNDA.

So, knowing that, could you live with one single profiling bed (supplied) adjacent to your partner’s bed. It is highly unlikely that you’ll be supplied with a double profiling bed.

Regarding the alternating air mattress: please, please tell whoever gave you the mattress that it is not fit for purpose and you need a better one - which make and model mattress were you given? xx

Is it an option to get a profiling bed and put it next to a full-size bed?

Ellie, my mattress is a Comet II Dynamic iQ medical. I’ve tried all settings but still end up in a lot of pain. I have asked for a better one. When I spent a couple of nights in hospital I had a very comfortable mattress and passed the details onto my OT. Same old story I’m afraid, a panel has to decide!

Kim, I don’t have space for a single next to our bed plus bedding couldn’t be shared which would restrict my ability to wake my husband when I need him in a hurry.

          thanks for your help

            🙄

That Quattro mattress has come up before, Louise, and not in a good way. It fell far short of the 'marshmallow' metric.

Have you a MND/Community/Palliative Care Nurse who can advocate (do some shouting) on your behalf: this has to be sorted soon or your health and wellbeing will suffer.

Have you checked the price of the mattress you had in hospital? Is it much more expensive than others? Of course the irony is that it's more economical to prevent pressure sores than it is to treat established pressure sores. Could you rent a mattress for a few weeks whilst you wait for the decision?

I don't know how you get your husband's attention during the night but, if you need an audible cue to wake him, depending on your ability to move, consider a wireless doorbell (mine is on my pillow and I touch my head against it) or the OT should be able to souce a movement pap or buddy button linked to an alarm. xx

We had a single hospital profiling bed and I had an ordinary single bed alongside.

To be able to use a hoist we had to move his bed about to allow for a carer on each side of the bed and transfer into wheelchair etc, but at night beds were pushed together to watch TV in bed and sleep. Fortunately hospital bed was on wheels, it just took a bit longer but solved the problem.of space around the bed but still being together.

Also prior to needing a hoist we had a molift, which has to be able to fit under the bed. We couldn't have done this with a divan bed.

Ellie, I replied to you a while ago but obviously it didn’t post. I have the doorbell type button to link me and hubby. Unfortunately when I spent the night in my chair once I was unable to wake him until the sixth press! Hence he must be in thumping distance in case I need him in a hurry.

The mattress I had in hospital was an Invacare that costs £1200.

Oh my days... men and heavy sleep 🙄

The ringer part of my bell is plugged into a socket beside my husband's bed, volume up high (louder than his snores) and plays a very annoying tune 😁 He wakes every time! xx
