    Leg braces?

Hi folks. Bit of advise please.

Can no longer stand as one foot falls completely on its side even with my ankle brace on and I can see my knee is now totally out of alignment with my shin and foot.

Been in touch with orthotics but 7 weeks before I can get appointment.

Does anyone know if there is a type of knee and foot brace that might help and put things straight?

    Love to you all xxx

Sorry no but good luck Shirl, Lynne x
ALS diagnosed November 2017, limb onset. For the 4 yrs previously I was losing my balance.

I'm staying positive and taking each day as it comes.

      Hi Shirley,

I’ve had dealings with the orthotics department at Crystal Palace and its very difficult getting an appointment. It might be worth asking to speak to someone and plead urgency. If you stress that you are in danger of falling then often does the trick! (Tears often work too!)

      Good luck. X

That made me smile Sarah, perhaps not in a good way, my husband went to our local jobby for a leg brace fitting when he was at single drop foot stage, they put it on him and he promptly fell flat on the floor, they didn't/wouldn't help him get up............at that point he could still crawl and managed to find a chair to use as a prop,

Needless to say he never EVER used it and that was the end of that,

Shirl I'd be slow to buy a leg brace as they can be quite specific to their task, I'd worry you may do more harm than good if you wore the wrong one... Have you seen any online you think may suit you?

As Sarah said, it's def worth trying to speed up your appointment, maybe they have a cancellation list?

Orthotics usually fit something like this (but yours may differ significantly, depending on your needs)

Hopefully you get an earlier appointment.

          Love Ellie.

              Hi Shirl,

I am sorry youre having to wait for an appointment .It's so unfair when our time is so precious.

My physio has fitted leg supports to stop my leg turning onto my ankle in my wheelchair. She did find me leg supports when I was still able to walk but I think they are very specific to your needs, as Ellie says.

I'd hate to be the voice of doom but .... do take care trying to walk. I persisted when my foot wouldnt straighten and had a bad fall. That was a couple of years ago and now I am more independent and safe in my powerchair. I'm not saying this would be you .. just a friendly warning.

              Take Care,
              Love Debbie x

I was only diagnosed in January this year. But my foot drop started on July 2019. I had to wait three months for a orthotics. I had a ankle strap at first . But as my foot drop got worse I researched for something better. I Found Turbomed. This helped greatly. Unfortunately now that the muscles in my legs are so weak. I don’t wear it often. I have also got a pair of the ones pictured in a previous post. Don’t think I could wear them all the time but help with my balance around my home.
