Has any members found an insurance company they would recommend for insuring a WAV but not one under the 'motability' scheme? I have just bought a former 'motability' scheme WAV from a private sale

We insured ours with Hastings (via Compare the Market) as a private vehicle with "adaptations". I believe insurance companies are not allowed to discriminate against disabled drivers. The annoying thing is that as I am too old to receive PIP I have to pay the full road tax. I own the car but my partner has to drive as I have the MND and couldn't renew my license at 70.

Admiral are pretty good. Again, insured as a car with adaptations. They seem well-used to dealing with WAVs, and I speak from experience as someone drove into the back of mine before Christmas! They’ve been pretty helpful.

I use Fish Insurance which have a part that specialises in WAV’s. It also includes special breakdown cover that will get you home in your wheelchair. Or so they say as fortunately I have not had to use it. 🙂
