    Boot Hoist

I’m thinking about getting a hoist put in my car to left my power chair into the boot. Has anyone got experience of using one and any idea of costs

My advice would be to future proof a bit more and plan solutions to drive it into the car with the patient in it. otherwise could be an expensive very short term solution.
Carer for husband diagnosed with ALS April 2021. Hand onset. PEG fed, completely immobile, communicated with eye gaze

    Sense of humour intact throughout.

    Sadly passed away peacefully 2/9/22

I have a boot hoist a from a company called autochair. They came out to give a quote and see if my car was suitable. We love it! It meant that I could go places on my own as I could use it with ease ( I’m quite a wimp!) my daughter could also use it - another wimp! We looked at getting a wav but we love our Picasso and it was a much simpler solution. I can’t remember how much it was but the company I mentioned are extremely helpful.

We were thinking about doing this but there are limits as to how much weight a car will take so we were advised against it. Also, you need to be able to transfer from the wheelchair into the car. We went for a VW caddy max WAV so we can drive the wheelchair in and are future proofed for when hubby is unable to transfer. It has a row of passenger seats so we also have space for the dog, buying it is definitely one of the best things we’ve done through this MND journey. We didn’t buy it on motability as there was such a long wait for new vehicles.

We looked at having one fitted by a company called Autochair. The cost was around £2k and it was very good. We were looking at it for my fold up powered wheelchair. In the end we bought a used WAV as this can also be used with my heavier chair. The hoist does require bolting to the body of the car so my reduce it second hand value. A few things to consider.
