    Nostalgia

Came across this pic on FB and it got me thinking back to childhood.
No such thing as “snow days”, we walked to school no matter what. We would take our pumps in a bag to change out of our wellies. Our socks were put on the classroom radiator to dry.

I also remember walking to school in a pea soup fog by following the line of fences and walls.

"Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." (Herodotus)

The snow nostalgia for me is when our kids were at school. Any hint of snow and we would gather round the radio during breakfast listening to the local station as they read out the list of school closures in the county. The kids were praying to hear their school was closed, while the parents hoped for the opposite

My 4yo self and 5yo neighbour used to take the (ordinary city) bus home from school every day - of course there were lots of older kids and mums on the bus too but can't see that being 'okay' nowadays. And I'm not nearly as old as you Bowler 😁😘😘

Diagnosed 03/2007. Sporadic Definite ALS/MND Spinal (hand) Onset.
Eye gaze user - No functional limbs - No speech - Feeding tube - Overnight NIV.

Going to Petticoat Lane Market with my dad every Sunday morning. Seeing the stalls full of puppies in the late 70s. That would never be allowed now ( rightly so ).

Hearing my dad call all women love and thinking surely he doesn't love them all 😂.

I used to walk just under 3 miles to school (and back) every day to save the 3d each way bus fare. If it had been more than 3 miles I’d have had a free bus pass! Used to spend the 6d in the school tuck shop. And yes we went in all weathers.

When I first started teaching in the early 80s ( I was 21 ) if it was snowing I used to take my class out to build a snow man. We would then make hot chocolate and paint pictures and write snow poems.

When I finished teaching 35 years later the children weren't allowed outside if there was one snowflake in case they slipped and there was no time to make drinks or come off curriculum.

Such a pity because we all loved the snow days xx
