What sort of bed/mattress
My wife who has MND is now struggling with her mobility especially getting up from her chair and bed. Chair one is easily sorted using a rise recliner chair. The issue is with our bed. We currently have a DRAW DEVAN BED WITH A MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS. Viv struggles to turn over or get up from this as the memory foam just moulds itself to her shape as it is designed to do. My question is what type of beds and mattress do others use, costs etc. Cheers Mark.

Hi Mark;

Many of us have hospital type "Proformer" single beds. These are attainable free from your district nurse. They normally come with a thinner memory foam mattress but you can change that. They can also have grab rails securely attached. The beds move in five ways which makes most things easier. I reckon a sprung mattress would be easier and ask her OT about grab rails.

You can also ask her OT about a rise and recline chair, they can make sure that you get one of the right size. The Mnda sometimes lend them out via your OT as well.

Does Viv have an Occupational Therapist (OT)? The OT would be able to carry out an assessment to see if there are any pieces of equipment which could be provided which suited Viv's individual needs.

As Terry mentioned, a lot of people living with MND will have a hospital-style bed which can make getting in and out and repositioning much easier. There are a variety of different types of mattresses which could also be provided. Memory foam mattresses tend to be very comfortable but can be quite difficult if someone has mobility problems. The District Nurses at Viv's GP surgery would be able to look in to providing a suitable mattress for her.

The OT would be able to provide a riser-recliner armchair. If they do not have any available then the OT could apply to the MND Association for the loan of one of our riser-recliner armchairs.
