Hoist

Hi all, It’s been a few months since I’ve been on the forum, mainly due to feeling depressed. But I am ok now. I have been given a wheelchair which once seated in I can’t get out of. What I need is a portable hoist, so any ideas on how to get one would be appreciated. Can I get a grant? Do the NHS provide one?

Yes Steve Bowler is right - Albert had an assessment last week for one and was given 3 alternatives but we think the really only suitable one would be one supported from the ceiling,

He continues to use his banana board for sideways shunts so for the time being we are leaving it at that, once the arms go then thats another whole new ball game

I'm just going to echo what the others have said, speak to the occupational therapist (OT) and they will be able to assess and identify a suitable hoist and then provide one.

Hi Steve,
I’ve been down this road a while ago and the OTs tried me on a portable hoist. Medequip delivered one and the OTs came shortly after. The only problem was that the legs wouldn’t go under my bed or either side of the toilet. Ceiling hoists are marvellous but a bit expensive. I still have use of my arms so i can ‘self hoist’ and love the independence. My biggest problem has been finding the right sling. My OTs have been fab and I’ve even had a sling rep to the house to try a variety. I wanted one that kept my arms free so I can move. A ‘toileting’ sling turned out to be the right thing especially as it does what it says on the packet!

Thank you all. I have contacted OT and I am waiting for them to get back to me. I'll let you know what they say.

podgeuk It's no harm to ask the OT to do a full assessment while they are at it, there may be other gadgets which would make your life easier. xx
