How to hire a team of carers privately

    Hi everyone,
I hope you all had a great Christmas.
I was wondering if anyone has any advice about how we can go about employing a team of carers for my husband. His mum and I have been managing his care since the pandemic started, but I'm pregnant again and so we really need some external help soon!
We have previously had a carer from an agency provided by Social Services, but Matt didn't like the chopping and changing of carers, and didn't think they were very good either i don't think, so we think directly employing some people will be better as we'll have more choice over who we get. Does anyone have any experience of this? Is it actually better to directly employ someone rather than use an agency, or are there another set of problems with direct employment that i don't know about yet?!
And where do you advertise for a carer? We are reluctant to use something like Gumtree. Is there a more official recruitment agency out there that people have used?
We have asked Matt's OT to come and do an assessment so we know what needs to go on the job description.
Any help or advice around this subject would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks so much
    Lizzy

Contact social services or local mnd association

    • Yes, agencies are bad news for people who have MND, they only cater for basic care needs. Demand Direct Payments from your council and try Indeed for recruiting disgruntled care workers.

Later next year I will be bringing out a care app to nail care in general. From my personal experiences, basic care just isn't good enough for people with MND.

You must use the self-employment model to avoid pension and PAYE liability but my app will deal with that.

        • Not yet GB67. It is taking longer than I imagined. Been nearly 3 years. I am working on the data entry website and the carer rotas. Looking like November/December when I will be running Alpha.
