    Oxygen levels

I'm concerned. I'm on n.i.v and today I got up and felt very lethargic. After a fews hours I used my finger tester and oxygen low at 87/88
I was so tired I went to bed. Took another test and its still low.
my partner rang respiratory and they said to go to hospital if it doesn't improve.

My care plan states I don't want to go to hospital. But what would/could they do for me if I do go?

Diagnosed May 2021 bulbar onset als.

Might be a chest infection, have you checked your temperature?

Presumably your partner’s Sats are normal on that monitor.

Have you used NIV to see if your Sats increase?

If you can’t get a GP or nurse to come listen to your chest, I’m half tempted to suggest getting paramedics out solely to check you over. Are you breathless?

It’s a horrible decision to make re hospital, I’m sorry Shelly, I’d really struggle with that too. xx

Ellie niv slightly pushed it up. My partner did the test and 97. My oxygen being low was raised at last respiratory.

I'm going to do x 4 hypertonic nebuliser sessions daily and take my Erdosteine see if it is plugged mucus. I don't feel chesty or coughing.

Think paramedics will just say hospital. Then think they would do chest xray see if build up of mucus.
But 2 people I know re mnd have gone hospital and well not cared for in the right way.

I know most of you know what a predicament it is xxx

shelly21 - really appreciate your dilemma. It is such a worry when you have serious symptoms but no confidence of good care in hospital.

I hope you can get your Oxygen levels sorted out without a trip to hospital xx
Diagnosis confirmed as atypical ALS Jan 2022 (age 46) after several years misdiagnosed.

Symptoms began in left foot 2017. Now widespread. Powerchair user, useless left arm and clumsy right hand but generally positive!

shelly21 sorry no advice but wanted to give you a hand hold. Will the district nurse come to you if you can’t get your GP to come? Xx

shelly21 is your area covered by an out of hours doctors service? For our area we call our local gp surgery number out of their opening hours which forwards to the on call doctor service? Really hope you can get your levels up and feel better soon. And its awful that so many mnd patients are so anxious about the level of care in hospital. xx

Thank you all. I've read re steriods that help with low oxygen sats. I have them in my rescue pack .
so shoving all the meds at it, plus loads nebulizer and niv.

If not right in the morning I will call palliative team.

I'm not breathless and I'm relatively calm. I know the reality of what the outcome could be.

                    But I'm still hopeful 😌 x

Sorry just seen this, how are you today shelly21? I hope the increased nebuliser and meds will help but it would be worth getting ti doctor out today to check you over before going into the weekend. I hope things improve soon. Thonking of you and sending my love x

shelly21 if it helps mine will go down to 77 I am not on NIV. I used to go to work every day with it below 90.

Yes you have to do things very slowly so you don't over burden the system. I don't know if you can still talk, but if you can, I found that a natural way of bringing them up a bit is to talk as of course you are having to use your own muscles to force air in and out.

I tend to use two sensors, and as Ellie says then always calibrate it with someone if you can.

Hope everything improves for you xx
