    NIV - Cold Air

    Hi

My Dad feels extremely cold when using the NIV due to the cold air

Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution? He is wrapped up warm with the heating on but it isn't enough

    Many thanks

May I clarify what you mean, Aadam; does your dad feel extremely cold throughount his entire body or does he feel the air is too cold in his nose?

The NIV machine uses room air so, if the ambient temperature is relatively warm, the air your dad gets, should reflect that, although it will be delived using some pressure.

Do you know if he gets a good air seal with his mask or could he be feelin air leaking from his mask onto his face or neck?

Does he use a humidifier with the NIV? A humidifier warms the air before it reaches the nose, but it also moistens the air, which your dad may or may not need/want.

Heated hoses are available and compatible with most NIV machines, which may help.

Or perhaps the air is delivered with a bit too much pressure.

His respiratory team may have the solution. xx

      Thanks Ellie

He feels cold throughout his body but the room temperature is always warm

I tried the NIV Mask liners to close off any air and cannot feel any cold air seeping through the sides

      He does have a humidifier

I'll look for the heated hose, thank you

If it only happens when he uses NIV, your dad's respiratory should be made aware of it. xx

Ellie Hope you are well. Could you advise where to get the heated hoses please? Our MND team at UCLH have not been very helpful and just advised us to up the settings on the humidifier to the highest which has helped a slight but Dad is still finding it cold

Not sure if it is the air because nothing seems to be leaking and the leak rate is 0

Aadam Heated hoses can be pricey, often well over £50, so best to shop around if UCLH won’t/don’t supply one.

Search online for 'Heated CPAP Hose' and make sure the hose is compatible with your dad’s NIV machine (important to do, plus you might want to check the user manual for any notes: it’ll be online if you don’t have a hard copy)

There are generic ones as well as branded ones but do also check directly on the machine manufacturer’s online store, as other retailers aren’t always cheaper.

Let me know if you can’t find what you're looking for. xx

Ellie Unfortunately the manufacturer came back and said there is no compatible heated hose with no alternative suggestions! Its a Resmed Stellar 150

Might just try a generic one and see if it works

Aadam It may be the case that the Stellar machine doesn't accomodate a heated hose and you need a hose with its own power supply which, tbh, is not ideal and may cause problems.

A lot of retailers have Live Chat, so it's def worth picking their brains. xx
