    Painful Fingers

    The second and third fingers of both of my hands are curling into my palms. When I try to pull them straight I experience severe pain. Is this MND? Has anyone any knowledge of this affliction?

    Peter's fingers are curling in. At first it was just his ring fingers but now all are affected. He has resting splints to help preserve hand function. I do not think it is painful as he straightens them.

      Hi Clive;
      Yes, it's another gift from Mnd.
      I get my two index finger curl in, and sometimes they all cramp up, my ring fingers curl at the first joint and the second two joints overextend making a weird shape that hurts. I also get whole hand cramp.
      I normally know when it is going to happen as it usually happens when I am trying to do something that is hard for my hands to do or requires a lot of force.
      I recon Quinine or tonic water (with gin) would help or try to relax them. Don't ask them to do too much. I, like Peter have a resting splint and it does give some relief although not much good for working.
      Good Luck, Terry

        Hi clive nice to see you back.when robs fingers starting curling in i bought a hot wax therapy machine off tinternet.i would put aqueous cream on his hand s and once heatedwax had heated would brush the wax on then put plastic bag,food ones were good size then put the mitts on and left them on for about forty mins.it did help lessen the pain but not the curling as this is part of mnd.the strange thing was a couple of months before he passed the fingers straightened out again.hope this helps.love caroline x

          Hi Clive,

          My index and second fingers on both hands are curling inwards. If I exert them too hard towards my palm they can cramp up with a cramp pain. so I try to avoid that.

            My mother has recently become very agitated by her fingers curling over. She is unable to straighten them and them sometimes hurt. She is still managing to use a walking frame to move around but her fingers mean it is difficult to grip.

              Passive movement helps, they stretch out the tendons gently and this can keep them a little straighter for longer and splinting, but the movements need to be done everyday otherwise they will just carry on curling. hope this is helpful. Ang

                Hi Clive,
                Irene ,like everyone had the hand forming a claw. She went to the orthotics department of the local hospital and was measured and supplied with hand splints which she wore in bed every night. For pain ease she had carers who gave her aromatherapy massage . They were shown how to do this by the lady from the local hospice. She found this very relaxing. For persistant pain she used Voltarol which I massaged into the area of pain.
                If you have a young attractive carer willing and able to do the aromatherapy I am sure this will help. The local hospice had a travelling lady who came to the home to do this and she showed the carers the technique. We bought the creams, oils and aromas.
                I am sure it will make a difference.
                John

                    Hi Rory;
                    Take a look at my picture on my profile, Have you got to my state yet. I have been told that you hair and nails grow faster when you have Mnd. I don’t believe that but my teeth have certainly lengthened.
                    Love Terry

                      I would get painful hand cramps, not when typing but when I do something fiddly. I use a handspring to exercise my grip, not sure if it does anygood but at least I feel I'm doing something,

                        I get that too Arthur. I don't think that exercise does any harm but try not to over do it. Do not put loads of pressure on, it is better to have a light load and go through a full range of movement, well as much as you can. Stop before you feel much fatigue.
                        Cheers Terry

                              Talking of fingers, my little finger on the right hand has been splaying out and I can't bring in in to the others. Talking to hand therapy and they said the tendon is at risk of sliding off of the knuckle. They have given me a bandage type thing to tire it to the other one. I have not had much pain yet but if the tendon slips, oh joy.
                              I guess others have a similar problem, Terry
