    Struggling with emotions

    Hi everyone,
Sorry if I ramble, dad was diagnosed in January with ALS on set upper limb.
His speech is already too damaged for voice banking, he has some difficulty with swallowing on occasions, he has little use of his arms now. His memory isnt great and his emotions are all over the place.

I am doing everything in my power to help him and mum. I see them every single day too, but every time I see him I feel crushed. I feel like I'm choking. Its sooo hard.

I dont want dad to know I feel like this so I cant go to a councillor.
But please someone tell me they understand x

    Hi Boden,

If he is crying when should be laughing or visa verser, uncontrollably then there is a good chance that a drug will sort it out.

Around ten percent of us have emotional liability and a SSRI Antidepressant drug normally sorts it out. Not sure if if SSRI are right abreveations or the name of the drug normally given out but I think it's all in this thread

Hello Boden, I suffered terribly from emotional lability, it was extremely frustrating which ironically made my emotions even worse, I would laugh for hours over someone dropping something, it was exhausting, taking certain antidepressants have given me some control back, by no means perfect but a lot better. Talk to your dads neurologist or GP, as for you, finding all this out in January, I’ve seen how much my family struggled and still are, don’t be afraid to ask for help and try to take each day as it comes, hope you have family and friends around you to support you, keep strong

Thank you both for replying. Dad is currently on an antidepressant and riluzole. So hopefully they will help as he has only been taking them for a short time.
I think I might need to see a councillor after all

          Hi Boden

          Very sorry about your dad.

Yes, I think you should talk to somebody about your own very understandable feelings. See it as a positive thing. You must look after yourself so that you can help dad.

          Good luck.

Hi Boden. Not surprising that you are feeling emotional. Keeping it in might work in the short term but can have consequences on both your psychological and physical health. The old saying that it’s better out than in applies here. If you have no outlet for your feeling then a counsellor is a good strategy to take. I hope that your GP can get you an appointment quickly. Love Lynne x
ALS diagnosed November 2017, limb onset. For the 4 yrs previously I was losing my balance.

I'm staying positive and taking each day as it comes.

Biden, yes emotional level can be hard. I formally diagnosed with MND coming up 6yrs ago. My emotions level is high but only when listening to my classical music favourites. I had brilliant 70th birthday my 11yr old granddaughter plays violin and her daddy got her play theme from The Godfather and her brother plays the piano and he played Rhacmaninov 2.
I laugh and cry and I chew flannel so not making a noise. Off out tomorrow to Brum Town Hall for lunchtime regular Trotter Organ Comcert.
My boys brought Mum Alexa for Christmas and I laugh a lot.
                Best wishes John
