    Nippy 4

I was lucky enough to bring home a Nippy 4 Tuesday after one night of trying it. I have used it for a couple of hours during the day time and used it for eight hours last night. It has caused me sore areas either side of my nose that are sore and feel brused. I know that I should have made more effort to get a second different mask type but I didn't want to push my luck.

Like always I'm over the weekend.

    Any advice?

Using the mask didn't seem to give me more energy but it made me more relaxed the next day and I didn't cough.

    Love Terry

    Hi TC,

Is it the mask causing the problems rather than the Nippy - as in, does the air pressure feel OK?

If it is, what mask is it - does it look like this?

      Hi Graham and Ellie;

      Thanks for the link.

I think that the Pressures seem ok' my nose is quite wide so it's the sides that are feeling bruised and not the top.

this is the mask i have, Airfit F10,

The ResMed AirFit F10 full face mask delivers the comfort and reliability patients have grown to trust in our traditional full face masks, but in a

I think the pressure is set ti 14 6

That's a nice mask Terry, generally quite comfortable.

It could be the wrong size but you were probably measured for it in Papworth - what size is yours? The mask rim shouldn't sit on the side of your nose. (There is a sizing template on their site)

Or maybe the straps are just a tad tight?

Do contact them if it's still causing soreness and ask them to post you a different size or a different mask brand to try. If you can wear nasal masks, that should get over the big honker you have but not everyone can wear nasal masks.

As a short-term measure you could try putting plasters on your skin for padding - my nurse gave me Duoderm Extra Thin plasters which didn't interfere with the air seal. Creams, including barrier creams, can damage the rubber so are not recommended.

        You'll get it sorted!

        Take care.

        Love Ellie.

        • hi terry,

further to ellie's good advice, the mask may need subtly bending to relieve the pressure points. guessing that cotton wool may relieve pressure.

My over night at hospital was set at 12 3 so maybe in order to seal 14 6 I tightened it to much. Have since cut my wiskers off but doubt I'll be wearing it tonight.

            The size is Large.

            Shame, Terry

Yes I heard smooth faces get better seals. Sorry the cat has lost his whiskers

The straps can be snug, rather than tight, but they shouldn't hurt.

Leave it tonight, give your face a rest! And you feel 14 6 is better for you than 12 3 - not too strong, forced or distracting??

I'm glad you got NIV anyway - be prepared

Hope you get a good sleep tonight.

              Love Ellie.

                Hi Terry

My Mam has the same issue. She has tried a few masks but they don’t seem to work so always reverts back to the original one, however it really hurts her nose. She now has a boomerang strip for her nose and it seems to be working. Hope you get sorted soon x

                  Hi Terry

I had the same problem when I started my using my nippy and in fact where it got me was across the bridge of my nose.

My breathing lot provided me with a slightly different mask that fits under my nose - see

AirFit F30 is a full face CPAP mask for sleep apnea. Its cushion rests under your nose for enhanced comfort & covers less of your face for more openness.

                    Thanks Andy;

They are sending me out a mask, don't know what one. Your other one could be quite good being shorter,

I am quite rough am very tired, finding it hard to ware the mask.

Been outside this afternoon for over a hour, so nice here.

                        No need to apologise, mate.

If your body has had enough, the bravest thing to do is to let go - harsh though that will sound to many who haven't lived this very difficult life for years... You and you alone will know what reserves you have.

I hope you have good palliative nursing care available to you, either at home, in the hospice, or both, and know when to ask for help and support.

Wishing you much support and love over the coming weeks.

                        Big hug,

                        Love Chimp.

Reading this makes me very sad but I know how much we struggle with this disease. I can only wish that you are comfortable and without pain. You are an inspiration to members of this forum and your humour, advice and compassion are invaluable.
