Hi, my mum has developed difficulty reading to the extent that she can't form the words from letters. It was the last pleasure she had left and now seems to be getting quite depressed. Has anyone else come across alexia, the loss of ability to read?

Welcome to the Forum, Suffia, sorry you've had to join us.
No, I haven't heard of people with ALS getting pure alexia but that doesn't mean it's not possible.
Has your mum been evaluated by a Neuropsychologist in the MND Clinic? It's possible that her executive function has been impaired by the ALS/MND - a significant proportion of us do get some form of cognitive, executive or behavioural impairment unfortunately, so maybe that's the issue?
I'm so sorry your mum is experiencing this and understand how much she misses reading now. It's a poor substitute I know, but there are audiobooks available from free on the BBC Sounds app to monthly subscription services, such as Audible.
