    Bed Comfort

We've recently got a new profiling bed which is great, however the mattress is quite firm for my partner's liking and keen to get input from anyone else who has had a similar experience so far. Talking to the nurse and OT but always good to hear from the people actually using the various products.

Currently our routine means that I am up 5/6 times throughout the night turning him which means both of us barely getting a good sleep.

He has upper limb onset and he's getting sore lying on the one shoulder for too long (and I believe hips are getting sore too) does anyone have a specific type of mattress or any tips/routine to increase comfort?

    Keen to hear thoughts.

Although I can't help Tess, I'm interested in any replies you get as I also have to turn over every 1.5 hours because of shoulder and hip pain. Could you try a mattress topper? We have a very firm mattress and Louise put a spare summer duvet on top of it. This helped a little. I also sleep with a pillow between my knees, which helps a bit.
Each day is made easier with a bit of humour.

Tess, I have an alternating air mattress, which can also be made firmer or softer. It's very, very comfortable, relieves all pressure from my body, which means I don't feel any urge to be moved during the night - I cannot move in bed.

Speak to whoever organised the bed for him and ask for a suitable mattress - he is at high risk of developing pressure sores, as well as being constantly tired from such disturbed sleep, which no one needs 😣

A pillow under his knees might help with drag on the hips.

      Good luck.

      Love Ellie.

I agree with Ellie regarding air mattress.

The difficulty with such a specialised bed (with side seat position) is that most of the toppers or alternative mattresses by the district nurses won't fit. So possibly looking to see if the company have another option...otherwise we'll be looking at a hospital bed to be provided.

We had been given a repose air lilo thing to try and it was hanging out of the bottom of the sheet and was far thinner than the bed so ended up being a messy affair.

Tess, if the bed's width is the issue, then maybe a bariatric mattress is the answer?

I'm not too sure as I thought it was a standard single. I'll let you know how we get on with options...I think the alternating air mattress was mentioned today, similar to yourself..

So many appointments and new faces popping in and out recently...it's exhausting and I know my partner feels the exact same. Can't wait till everything is set up and we can be left in peace....(she says as she yawns), but I do think we're at least 2 months out of having the appropriate adaptions/equipment to get on with. All trial and error right now.
