    Ideas for throat clearing

Every time I try to clear my throat my gag reflex engages leaving me unable to breathe and panicing. I have a mild cold and for some reason most of the muccus is going down my throat instead of running down my nose
What can I do? things like day nurse dry me out too much leaving me feeling like I am suffocatin

    Hi Broken Nails,

I cannot advise you from personal experience, but perhaps some of the info on this thread might be helpful.

I can't be pleasant at all if you are having difficulty breathing. I hope that advice here will help, but if not it might be advisible to contact your MND nurse.

Hope you feel much better soon.

      hi
I have the same problem and when it is bad I have found that a spoonful of raw honey a few times a day makes the world of difference
also a regular sip on a glass of very cold water helps
pineapple juice is also very effective
      hope this helps

Sue had a mild cold or chill, was giving her meds, the next thing some must have gone down the wrong way, she started gagging and panicking, for the next hour she was bringing up what ever was in her throat, it was clear flehm like stuff, called the doctor, he was there within half an hour, all sorted but he didn't really say what it was.

          Hi Broken nails,

I hope that you are getting better. When I have a virus I can have a lot of sticky stringy mucus when I lay down in bed and cough. I feel unable to breath with so much of the stuff as I can't clear it. I have to lay on side with some kitchen roll under my mouth and then I can get the stuff out.

If you have a profile bed, you might be able to slope it slightly making your head a bit lower. Of course this can only happen if you can move and breath quite well or your carer moves you.

At other times a nebuliser might help you.

I am getting over the cold now thanks everyone. Except Fri night I got up to go to bed but someone else had put one of the brakes on on my rollator damn thing swung around on me lost my balance fell nose first onto the side of the tray. 2hr wait for ambulance. So lay on my front bleeding and developing pressure areas on my knees anyway I now have a splendid broken nose. No one but I may touch the brakes now

              Hi BN,

Sorry to hear about your fall, and about having to wait so long for an ambulance.

So true about our rollator being our domain! I know exactly when I want the brakes on or off - and so there is a strict 'keep your mitts off my rolla!' rule, in my house.

I hope your nose isn't too sore and that your breathing is OK.

                  Hi BN,

That's good to hear that your breathing and eyes are OK - but having to lie there for 2 hours can't have been much fun! (You are very brave - I think I would have had a panic attack and passed out!)

I hope you are starting to get the support that you have been waiting for e.g from OT and physio etc

                      Good to hear the cold is going away BN;

                      Something positive.

So sorry to hear of your fall, Something negative.

Broken nose, 2 hours on the floor, etc. disastrous.

When I use a walker, I leave the brakes on and slide the rear wheels along. I also have a gallon of water as ballast.

Hope the sore nose soon stops hurting.

I don't need to put a gallon of water in mine Terry - it is already weighed down enough with "stuff " - drinks, snacks, lipstick, mobile phone, perfume, comb, mirror, tissues, hand cream etc - a bit like a lady's handbag really!

I am too weak to push with brakes on. Don't really push at all just hold and walk

                            Hi BN,

I can't push my rollator with the brakes on either, but I find it gives me enough stability to walk safely, as it is.

If you start to find it difficult and/or tiring to walk with your rollator, hopefully your local wheelchair services will be helpful in providing you with an electric wheelchair. My legs are not so good, and so I find that using my electric wheelchair sometimes rather than the rollator really helps with being able to get around. Your phsio or OT might have already spoken to you about your local wheelchair services, but if not, there might be details about wheelchair services on you local council's website (or they might have their own website).

I hope your cold has cleared up and that you are ok after your recent fall.

                            Best wishes,
                            Kayleigh x

Unfortunately where I am living is not suitable for electric wheelchair I am waiting to either get adapted housing from local authority or use my pension in one lump as deposit for a home with my eldest and soon to be husband and get that modified
