Gurgling noises in throat

Good morning
This week brings more changes in the form of gurgling sensation and noise in throat coming from further down.I am aware my swallow is more affected but just wondering if others have this problem.
Currently eating normal diet but can feel swallow is changing now .PEG being fitted 16 th June .Poor appetite in last few months .
My stomach feels full of wind too and increased need to pass wind noticed too.

The throat gurgle is audible to others too! (Hope flatulence isn’t 😂)Don’t suppose any tips or just have to get used to it?

oh mary you poor thing.

stephen is fine but his swallow is very good apparently. think pulling on those fags for so long has helped. guess some would argue that one.

im sure matthew spoke about noises in his throat. i know he spoke of wind but knowing guys they couldnt care less who hears them. you should just go with the flow if it makes you feel better.

come to think of it mary stephen said that the peg food gives him wind. but think he's always had wind so.........!

My burps rarely make it all the way up. First few times is very odd. Even rarer is stomach contents arriving at the back of my throat. Plus I have a kind of panic attack when I can't breathe through my nose during which noises, throat closures and coughing all happen. Baclofen and nasal spray saves me. MND the gift that never stops givng, aren't we the lucky ones. 😁😘🤗😍xx

Hi Matthew,
Anything that affects breathing is horrible and no wonder you panic.It’s hard to talk yourself into relaxing when you have attacks like you describe.I feel for you being alone when you feel like that.I seek reassurance from my husband Steve when I get anxious plus I pray.

As sister used to tell me, wherever you are, wherever you, don't be afraid let the wind blow free. Can't blame anyone now that enjoys a fag. I was thinking of taking up again - or something else.

Mary, could it be phlegm/secretions responsible for your throat gurgles? That can happen because of swallow issues, weakening cough or stomach reflux. If you take medication or think it could be gastric reflux, ask your nurse or GP if you should talk a 'stomach liner", a PPI.

Did your wind issue coincicide with you starting NIV by any chance? Sometimes if it's on a high-ish setting or if you're not entirely at ease with its use, you can end up gulping air and... what goes in, must come out 😉 If your swallow has changed, that could also increase in the amount of air you take in overall.

An underrated benefit of having a feeding tube is the ability to use it as an air vent 😄

Thanks Ellie,
The gurgling throat started this week .I think it may be my swallow that is changing gradually.It feels like wind in my throat and when I sit quietly I can hear the sound it makes.
I don’t think it’s gastric reflux though I have got some prescribed medication for that given months ago when I was getting a tickly throat.It made no difference so after a few months I stopped taking it.
I guess I don’t want to take lots of medications as know as I get worse there will be a need to add more pills into the mix.
Also it could be the NIV but unsure how to check the setting.I can ring the hospital respiratory team and ask them the setting and if they think it needs altering.
As usual Ellie you are so kind to share with so many of us what you have learnt living with MND for so long.Thankyou.

Yes I can give a good cough though not as strong as in past.It’s part of the deterioration I guess of swallowing I mentioned to district nurse who rang but she didn’t really have any ideas about gurgling sound .
