  • Assisted Killing in Scotland

I am pleased that I don't live in Scotland. They have just announced assisted killings for the terminally ill with mental capacity.

Now let's explore this for the people of Scotland...

Do you own your own house or business that a member of your family would like to own or take possession of?

Are you demanding to care for?

On top of that, your family now has a motive to make your life unbearable and in today's economic climate, the motive is more compelling.

I KNOW IN THE IDEAL WORLD THAT WE WANT TO ELIMINATE SUFFERING, but assisted killing is wrong and if love is real motive then a sentence is a small price to pay.

Sorry, Graham, but i didn't understand your post!
Mum died with MND in 1979 – My sister and I have a wonky gene, probably inherited from mum. Reckon my MND started sometime in 2018.

They haven't agreed to it. Legislation is being put forward and will be debated in the autumn.

I believe everyone has a right to decide and I don't believe it will be agreed to easily.
when i can think of something profound i will update this.

Graham personally I'd vote for that. With the right checks and balances of course. My view is my life my body my choice. However I understand that for others that's a 'no way' & Im respectful of differing views.
Well done Scotland for having the debate. Much needed.
Initial diagnosis 7-4-2021 'suspected MND' confirmed by 2nd opinion 4th June 2021 ALS. Began with R foot limp and lots of falls. NIV overnight. Generally weak. Mostly terrified.

I agree with Linda. I'd like the the choice to be available.

I think the choice should be there for those of us with terminal illness who have the mental capacity to make their own decisions. I think the rest of the UK should be considering it too.

                • I do wish that people would kill themselves(suicide) when they have the opportunity to do it themselves.

Carers have no say, unless they wish to kill themselves and for carers that wish their 'loved' ones dead, the question is why?

Over the years there have been many instances of dodgy goings on, on this forum. You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to understand what is going on.

It places a burden on us that want to live with the constant bleating of wanting to die from the minority. And often they choose to live in the end!

If you want to die, please quietly get on with it before you have to rely on someone else doing it for you.

Each to his/her own I guess… I was just saying this morning how it might be good to move to Scotland. I know I’m going to get pretty fed up with MND in time (to put it mildly!). I’d be very happy indeed if assisted dying was an option in England,
Thanks for raising the issue Graham, but I disagree with you wholeheartedly.

                    • It is not a matter of disagreeing Peter, the power balance changes within the family unit when one gets MND, and there has been harrowing posts over the years, some of which I have reported.

All of a sudden people are compelled to do the 'decent thing' and this is why the law is as it is. I thank God that the English law makers are not swayed.

                      • Peter, I am guessing you want to be able to kill yourself when the time comes?

Have you enquired with your GP how you can 'make yourself comfortable'?

You should be able to acquire enough morphine to last a week or two under the current rules.

I don’t want to engage in this conversation any more, thank you.

Oh the irony! That is exactly what is going on, our bodies are on a path of self destruction. Eventually we all will snuff ourselves out, mostly with suffocation and not by hanging but by type 2 respiratory failure.

Let's be honest we are all going to die. Some of us would like to decide when.

I think this conversation is difficult and Scotland hasn't made it law.
