  • Psychology - It's Important!

    Now where were we Matt.

Oh yes... we were discussing how people in general view us disabled people and in particular us with MND. We discussed the historical cultural dimensions and even more modern cultural dimensions. There are religious dimensions too.

There are supremacy dimensions too! How many times do people think that we are unintelligent because we can't talk, eh??

in the gym class - i wrote down on a pad i carry round that i am losing my speech, and that i have MND, showed it to the gym instructor for her to be aware. She WROTE back a reply. Had to point out that it's my speech that's the problem, not my hearing!! Bless. And the number of shop assistants who, because i slur my speech, respond as if i've had a lobotomy..... sure i'm not alone in this.

All I can say is being close to retirement they think I'm senile and invisible. 11 stone hardly invisible. Senile- they might have a point ๐Ÿคช I was asked the other day if I'm vulnerable. To what? To whom? If I was vulnerable he would have carried my shopping up the stairs. I'm OK I heard myself say. Perhaps not vulnerable just stupid as I dragged it up a steep flight of stairs on my own. ๐Ÿค”
when i can think of something profound i will update this.

You're not alone at all, JAC! x
Diagnosed July 2020, ALS bulbar onset. PEG and ventilator (mainly at night), and pretty poor speech, but legs still about functioning!

              • Our George knew about the human psychic Matt. It has so many facets that are based in self preservation naturally.

A few years ago the MNDA tried to encourage soaps to run stories on MND and Channel 4 ran with it. The portrayal was poor but it requires dedication and commitment to provide the muscle wastage as Benedict Cumberbatch did.

It is the fact that no one knows how to respond to people who have MND and are mute. It would add more realism if Eastenders actually followed a character to the real end or maybe Phil could get MND and I am pretty sure that his enemies would take full advantage. It would be great TV!
