    Managing constipation with a PEG

    Hi all,

Hope you are well. My hubby has a really bad distended abdomen and after a 12 hour A and E visit, his xray showed it was just constipation. He had an enema that helped but still having problems,. It was awful in A and E. Try not to go if you can. So many reasons why: no clue about MND and total inefficiency. Not medics fault I know. We ended up self discharging. He has a PEG. He is having small bowel movements. PBP

    Grateful for any help.

jomo Is this bout of constipation a one off or is he regularly constipated?

As he has had a PEG, laxatives and lots of water can go down the tube.

For impacation, Movicol/Laxido is usually advised, given as directed, sometimes in conjunction with a suppository, but the enema would have done the same job.

He may need a daily or almost daily laxative regimen to keep constipation at bay. If he gets food through the PEG, a fibre enriched product might be good, as is plenty of water. xx

The softener Docusate tabs is my little friend of choice taken when 1st sense something building up. Doesn’t work straight away and then like I imagine childbirth feels.

I use nutricia drinks called compact fibre. They work very quick for me. Have you spoke with your dietician for any advice.

Sorry for jumping in Mary: 5 bottles of Nutricia's Fortisip Compact provides 1500 calories, which may be what your Dietitian advised but, may I ask if you're losing weight? (1500 seems on the low side for calorie intake, but maybe it's right for your body size)

The ordinary Fortisip Compact 'drinks' have 0g fibre in a bottle, whilst the Fortisip Compact Fibre contain 4.5g fibre per bottle.
