Good luck with Friday's interview(s). Did you get any help in finding the candidates or did you advertise directly? xx
The company who run the payroll for the local authority (and advise me how to much to pay from direct payments) placed the ad on Gov.uk website and did all admin re; issuing contracts, arranging interviews etc. They even came to the interviews. So very helpful.

I've just received 3 copies of the contracts of employment, one for employee, one for me and one for the payroll company.

They then placed a further ad for the remaining hours hence further interview on Friday.

So far, direct payments is the way to go....

MMG Dare I say it without jinxing things 😬 but that sounds very straightforward, well done you - so happy for you that it's all working out well πŸ‘πŸ‘

It may be that you could count as a carer, or it may not. xx
Update - I have now employed 2 PA's and one week in all seems to be going well. The 42 hours are to be used as I see fit, and in terms of using a hoist I am one of the 2 required carers. Sooo we have 6 hours per day for 5 days a week at the moment and am interviewing for a 3rd weekend person on Friday. So far so good. One carer does 9.30 to 1.30 Mon - Fri and the other 1.30 to 3.30 and then 9pm to 10pm.
I then have 7 hours remaining for weekends.

I managed to go out for a coffee with a friend on Thursday for the first time in many months, and even went to a supermarket in person rather than online.

They even help with housework - bonus!!!!

    Hi Maria

If they haven't got the right aptitude I cant imagine they would bring what is needed to the job. Doing it because they have to rather than because they want to.

Personal care must be embarrassing enough having the same person each time, but not knowing who is coming and getting a chance to know and trust each other seems a lost opportunity.

I hope things get better for you.

    😘

In Canada, at least in my area, the employment centre pushes the unemployed into job retraining. Since we have a shortage of PSWs (Personal Support Workers) that’s the program they suggest. Aptitude doesn’t seem to be a consideration. They get funding to take the course and then hopefully off benefits.

I’ve only just started to need carers and it’s left a lot to be desired. I get 1 hour twice a week for personal care. The first week I had two different women. It took a lot of talking on my part to explain my limitations. They were nice enough, but it takes time to develop trust. Can’t wait to see who I get this week.

My carer visited for the first time today. It was a good experience. She helped me shower and get dressed, then changed the sheets on my bed and sorted out stuff in the kitchen (filled the kettle, my water bottle, got things out of the cupboard I needed). Soo much easier. πŸ™‚

Denise could you ask to be referred to a better hospital for support. My friend with mnd lives in Wiltshire but is under the care of Oxford mnd Centre. The nurse there is amazing. You can ask the g.p for a referral x
