There is absolutely nothng wrongly in having something tasty and enjoyable, there has to be some perks to living with a terminal disease, doesn't there 😏

As for the virgin Pina Colada, it will almost certainly contain pineapple juice, so it's a win-win for you Madge. xx

Have you tried using a suction machine Wayne? It's like a mini hoover for your mouth. xx

I’m on holiday at mo and drinking a lot of pineapple juice so this must work as I haven’t had a choking / phlegm incident since being here. My gp suggested fizzy drinks help too

Yes, I do use the humidifier. I have been using the NIV about eight weeks. Just on a low setting. Over the last few weeks, I have got into a routine of being able to sleep through to morning. Or waking about two then until after eight.,Which is bizarre because before, I had woken up in the night for a trip to the loo, for years and years. Of course that’s ok when your fit and mobile. So a big help to hubby . So hope 200ml of juice won’t through it all out. But will give it a go. Thanks

The night before, Lesley - 200ml of good quality pineapple juice before getting into bed - it's the bromelain (enzyme) in the juice which is the active ingredient.

Do you use a humidifier with your NIV? It can also help if your mouth or throat is nice and moist and your head and neck are in a good position for swallowing. xx

I also have the problem with phlegm at the back of my throat. I usually have a cup of hot water with honey and lemon, first thing. I had it before I had my NIV machine. I will try pineapple juice. Morning or the night before ?

Madge I got my advice advice from here. Can you call your respiratory team.

I use mucoclear hypertonic solution 3% through my nebuliser. If really bad I do x 4 daily.
I also take Nacsys 600 which is in soluble form.
Erdosteine meds especially after a chest infection.
Also does your cough assist need tweaking maybe. X

KK7 I am having the same problem. I have a cough assist machine but I don’t bring any phlegm up in fact my throat is rather sore now and trying to constantly clear my throat doesn’t help. I have tried pineapple juice and Gaviscon. I use an NIV at night. I’m getting so fed up with constantly clearing my throat. I’m not sure who to turn to for advice.
