    Aspiration Pnuemonia

Hi everyone. Just wanted to ask if anyone has had “ Aspiration Pneumonia” ( hope you’ve not😩)
My husband has been struggling with coughing episodes during and after meals and drinks. He did go for feeding tube several weeks ago but was unable to have one due to his stomach being too high because of weakened diaphragm.😩
Last night he was shouting me saying he was choking. I used his cough assist machine with little effects.
This morning his chest was “ rattling” so I contacted the surgery and G P came out and said he had a chest infection and would prescribe antibiotics. She later rang me to explain that there will be two lots of antibiotics as this is the protocol for Aspiration Pneumonia.
He doesn’t have a temperature and doesn’t particularly look unwell. Was just wondering how anyone else has felt with this and how long did it last for. Hope you don’t mind me asking this. Xx

Piglet I don't have experience of this but had pneumonia before although different type to aspiration. Had 2 courses of antibiotics which took about 2 weeks to shift. Really hope he improves soon once starting the treatment. X

Piglet It's not that unusual for people with ALS to have aspiration pneumonia and not realise it because the symptoms are very much the same as we endure daily.

Wishing your hubby a speedy recovery. xx

Hi Piglet, sorry to hear this. Does he need a speech therapy/dietitian review maybe?

Jackie R we do have a speech therapist who visits us regularly and regular phone reviews with dietician. My husband can take small amounts of relatively soft food but as Ellie commented that aspiration is quite common with MND condition. I’m just more careful with what I give him now to eat😯. Thanks for your reply xx
