    Quinine

    Has anyone been prescribed quinine for leg cramps and can say if it has worked for them?

    I saw the consultant on Tuesday and was prescribed it to try as a few times I have been woken up by cramp. I was told to try it for a couple of weeks and see if it makes a difference. I am just curious to know if others have tried the same thing. As I wasn't getting cramps every night it is impossible to tell if it is making any difference after just two nights of it!

    Hi Susan;

    I think that it helps a bit. When I stay have a weeks rest bite in the hospice I now tend to take it as I get a lot more cramps there. It's worth trying as is Baclofen and a muscle relaxant like Larazipam, (Ellie uses a better one).

    Let us know how you get on.

    Love Terry

      Hi Susan,

      If it's cramp, then lots of people get good relief from prescription strength Quinine. You should also try to eat food rich in potassium - e.g. bananas, avocado, spinach. Heat is also good for cramps so an electric underblanket or a heat pack should ease them (though who'd get out of bed @2a.m. to heat one )

      I don't get cramps, but take Tizanidine before bed and Baclofen 3x day for spasticity/high muscle tone.

          Sorry Susan - it was probably 200 mg! I think ml is liquid? It was definitely in tablet form and she took it an hour before bed

            Thank you so much. I just rushed to look and mine is 300mg so I am sure you are right Sarah. Interesting your Mum went down from 300 to 200. I think I need to see if it works really.

            Ellie, thanks so much. I hadn't thought of potassium rich foods but might have to rush and buy some bananas now, and spinach. Can't stand avocado so will have to ignore that one.

            I do have an electric blanket but it isn't on while I sleep and you are spot on - I can't see myself leaping out of bed in the dead of night to heat up something for the cramps. Fingers crossed the quinine works I think.

              Hello Susan
              For cramps I take AKG tablets and a protein shake fends them off.
              I did a cycle ride from Cardiff to Conway over three days just after diagnosis. The point is after the first day in the saddle I went for an evening meal during the meal I was suffering severe cramps through the meal.
              The following day at the end of the ride I had a protein shake and did not suffer from cramp.
              Hope this helps
              Cheers
              Darryl

                Hi Pacer;

                What AKG tablets do you take, how many and where do you get there from, etc.

                Thanks, Terry

                  Hello Terry
                  I use Kirkland and get them from I herb in the states just keep the order under £15 or the administration charge from the curriers is offensive.
                  I take 1 or 2 per hour when I can/remember.
                  Cheers

                    Thanks Darry;

                    It has never been easy stuff to find. So, I guess you buy one lot of 100 X 300mg tabs a time at a cost of $19.75 and p 7 p $4, that comes to about just over £17. I have been bitten by import taxes before, your advice please. Any other costs? Have you a promotion code for discount?

                    Regards Terry

                              Hi Terry,

                              It has actually been amazing taking quinine. I thought it would take a bit to kick in (to be fair I only got bad cramps a couple of nights a week anyway) but I have had no cramps at all since I started taking it which is fantastic.
