    Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Approx 2 weeks ago my GP arranged for me to have blood tests. At the time no reason was given. The surgery has since informed me I had extremely low vitamin B12 and has arranged an appointment to see my GP next week. Not sure what B12 deficiency means I checked on the NHS web site. This told me complications can cause vision loss, memory loss, loss of physical co-ordination which can affect your speech or walking, damage to parts of the nervous system, particularly in the legs. I should also see a Neurologist. These symptoms are exactly what I have now. I am not suggesting this is what is wrong with me but, I do find it strange.
    Regards,
    Steve

Can we get vitamin b12 naturally or do we need supplements? How we can keep up with what we are short of I will never know. Did you ask to be tested or did they just do it as part of something else?
when i can think of something profound i will update this.

      Hi Denise,
You get B12 from meat, milk and dairy products, and eggs. I didn't ask for the test and to date no reason as been given by my GP..

        Hi Steve,

B12 deficiency is one of the potential mimic conditions which should be ruled out before an MND diagnosis is given - remember when it felt like you donated half of your blood in little vials, well one of those tests should have checked your B12 level, as part of your neurological work ups.

I think there are enough different disease characteristics between B12 deficiency and MNDs for an MND specialist to call it, having reviewd all clinical and diagnostic test results, and hope this is the case with you.

I hope supplements correct your vision and memory issues, and I'd jump for joy (metaphorically, of course) if your mobility improved!

As a vegetarian, I have taken B12 supplements for years - meat and fish are big sources of B12.

Let us know what the GP says.

        Love Ellie.

          Hi Ellie,

I definitely had blood test before being diagnosed with MND so presumably one was to test my B12 levels. I just thought it strange that the difference between B12 deficiency and MND appeared pretty close. But as you say there are enough different disease characteristics between them for my consultant to call it. I will let you know what my GP says next week.

          love to you all.
          Steve

              Hi
I have been taking super B complex from costco, reasonably priced too. Kids sent from Birmingham Costco.
              thanks

We used to feed straight B12 to the competition horses. We bought it from the chemist in those big brown bottles and we would have a spoonful each day too. It was delicious like blackcurrant juice. Needless to say you can't buy it any more. It was very good for increasing energy which would be useful now x

Why can't we get it any more slp? It sounds wonderful. What a shame.

Denise just like everything you can't buy supplements from the chemist anymore . We used to buy the big brown glass bottles of all sorts of acid too and we would mix our own potions for horses foot problems. You can't do that now either. Health and safety gone mad x

Things just get more difficult and I don't understand why. Suppose you have to go through the vet and it costs more.

Sometimes but those old fashioned remedies were good and are mainly forgotten although you can source some things on the Internet xx

Then if you can get things on the internet why not the chemist? Stupid. Someone should compile a dossier of the old remedies. With the internet it should bring up some interesting recipes from all over the world.

I think in days gone by if you went to doctor. He'd stroke his beard ( he always had a beard) gaze at his row of shelves, and chose from a brown bottle or the green bottle. If you were feeling tired you'd get the green bottle. Anything else he you'd get the brown bottle.

And when I thought of the green bottle I know what went through my mind. 😊
