Hi everyone I have just signed up to the forum. I am a young at heart 64 year old and diagnosed with ALS in July last year
I live alone and am thankful for each day with my lovely pets. Each day I take pleasure from something simple such as sitting outside in my wheelchair and enjoying the fresh air. Gone are the days of being very sporty and active and earning my crust! So now I can enjoy this time after 48 years of working.
MND is my condition but I will fight it as best I can.

Hi Hazel and sorry you've had to join us.

Your positive attitude comes across - yes, we've had to readjust our expectations but, as you say, pleasure can still be found (especially in this glorious weather )

What pets have you? I have 3 four-legged creatures (2 equine, 1 canine) and 3 two-legged creatures (2 children, 1 husband) and I needn't tell you which group is more troublesome!!

I hope you have good support to help you get the most out of life.

    Stay safe.

    Love Ellie.
Diagnosed 03/2007. Sporadic Definite ALS/MND Spinal (hand) Onset.
Eye gaze user - No functional limbs - No speech - Feeding tube - Overnight NIV.

Hi Ellie nice to hear from you. I have a 15 year old British shoethair cat, a cockatiel of same age, two young budgies, two fantail goldfish and a small outdoor aviary from when I used to breed lovebirds. There are just two in there now who are around eight years old. I am very fortunate as my main carer is a cat person and also likes to care for the birds . I was married for 39 years but sadly my husband passed away six years ago after a long battle with MS.
I am so pleased we seem to have winter behind us and much brighter weather will hopefully continue

Hi Hazel, welcome to our forums. As Ellie stated you do sound positive like many of us living a day at a time. I too am happy that the winter is behind us but we’re all stuck in because of COVID 19. I hope that this virus is beaten before our next winter so that we can enjoy some days out.

You aren’t alone having to give up being sporty and it does take some time to get over.

I’m glad that you have a decent carer. I have a husband who is slowly taking over from me all of what I used to do ie cooking, washing clothes etc and cleaning our home. I’m mostly independent, just get help now and again, walker indoors and wheelchair outside.

Take care, and hugs from Lynne (another mature MND positive person) x
ALS diagnosed November 2017, limb onset. For the 4 yrs previously I was losing my balance.

I'm staying positive and taking each day as it comes.

Oh my, Hazel, that's quite a collection !

I have a picture of the old Tweety-Sylvester cartoon in my head now Breeding birds, how interesting! Great that your main carer likes the animals, it's an important for sure to get the right carers, not only to fit with your personality, but for your lifestyle too.

I'm sorry to hear about her husband - you've been dealt a tough hand in life.

          Love Ellie.

Hi Hazel and a warm welcome to the forum,

I am sorry about your diagnosis and also to read about your husband. As Ellie says, that's a tough hand in life.

It sounds like you have a really positive attitude, although I know it's hard to maintain this all of the time. Its great you connect well with your main carer and you have a love of animals in common. It's also good for our mood to enjoy this lovely weather and be outside.

            Take Care of yourself,
            Love Debbie x

Welcome Hazel. I too was 64 when I was diagnosed and in many ways happy that I had had a fulfilled life. I also fall into that group Mature with PMA (positive mental attitude). However, I would never claim to have been sporty - school netball team was my limit! Do not hesitate to ask questions on the forum. Although we all progress along different pathways, someone will probably have an answer from their personal experience.

                Welcome Hazel x
I too am sorry that you have had to drop in but you will find an answer to most questions you have from someone here x

It really is quite odd at the moment isn't it? I am finding great solace in the menagerie here. At the moment that includes my daughter and son and sons girlfriend who were all together in NZ when the lock down hit us and luckily managed to get a flight home 24hrs before the flights stopped. They were planning to be away for another year so its a shame but we are relieved that they are home and safe.
The rest of the gang have four legs,5 dogs and 8 ponies and they are my sanity and my therapy.

Nothing compares to breathing in the warm breath of a pony when you are having a bad day.

I am so so lucky to have all this and the warm sunshine is the icing on the cake.

I may be living with MND but it doesn't dominate my life. I admire your positive attitude and it will get you through the tough days.

                Keep enjoying the sunshine x
                Sarah xx
