Hi,
I can’t advise but I have developed a gurgling sound in my throat in last few months. After coughing fits I sound like I have phelgm in throat. One nurse suggested it’s because throat muscles are getting weaker.I am still able to swallow food and swallow drinks..
Does your wife have access to Speech therapist about swallowing issue? They can carry out a swallow test.
Best wishes

Hi Ricky,The speech and language therapist also liaises with the dietician about my nutritional intake.
I had a rig(stomach tube) fitted 4 weeks ago as respiratory consultant suggested it needed to be in place before breathing deteriorated. So at present I sometimes use RIG for food supplements s can eat food slowly and take fluids normally.
Sounds like your wife needs a review with diet, swallow , discussion about feeding tube .Hope your wife is known to a local hospice or palliative care team?
Best wishes
Mary

Try to ensure your wife is getting lots of water too. That Carbocisteine which Matthew mentioned is very good for thinning thick mucus, making it easier to swallow, but it's important to drink water too - if swallowing liquids is an issue, people understandably can restrict their fluid intake which makes all secretions stickier and more tenacious... Pineapple juice is also good-ish at thinning mucus.
