    Husband recently diagnosed

My husband has just been told that he has MND. It all started 5 years ago with foot drop. At the same time he was told he had type Diabetes. When he started to lose mobility in his left leg they thought it was perineal nerve damage that was 2 years ago. Since October his mobility steadily got worse and his right leg became affected.
He saw the Neurologist in April and on examination decided he needed nerve and muscle conductivity test. This revealed MND. He can now just about stand up to transfer to wheelchair is losing strength in arms and has minor swallowing issues.
We are about to start a round of hospital appointments following his diagnosis.
It’s been a tough couple of months.

Hi Rosie' welcome to forums. I'm sorry about your husbands diagnosis. I had foot drop before diagnosis. My trapped right peroneal nerve was released in an operation a couple of years before MND symptoms started. This history confused things and I believe contributed to a delay in my MND diagnosis.

I hope that your husband gets all the help that he needs ie OT, physio, speech therapist and wheelchair services. A speech therapist can help with swallowing problems.

It's a scary time for you both but you've come to a smashing resource for advice, tips, somewhere to share worries and sign posting to other sites and services.

Please take good care of yourself as well as your husband, Love Lynne
ALS diagnosed November 2017, limb onset. For the 4 yrs previously I was losing my balance.

I'm staying positive and taking each day as it comes.

Hi Rosie and welcome to the forum. Sorry that your husband has been diagnosed with MND - it's a lot to cope with but this is a good place to help you through. There is a lot of knowledge and experience floating around the forum, which can be useful, especially as we all understand what you and your husband are going through. We also understand how hectic it can be when you start seeing the various health professionals. There are some useful resources on the MNDA website which can help you keep track of who you and your husband are seeing and what they do.

          Hi Rosie,

Welcome to the forum! I am so very sorry for your husband's diagnosis, it's such a huge and overwhelming shock and it's hard to know which way to turn. The forum is a good place for emotional and practical support so it's good you've found us.

I too started with foot drop, which was initially attributed to a back problem before I was diagnosed. If your husband as had this for five years before being diagnosed it sounds like he has a slow progression.

Good luck with the hospital appointments because it is really hard to take everything in. It's a good idea to get e mails and phone numbers for any questions you might have later ( sorry to you if this is obvious !)

Take care of yourself and each other.
          Love Debbie x

Hi Rosie and welcome to the forum.

I’m sorry to hear that your husband has been diagnosed with MND and I understand how you must both be feeling. Depending on where you live I hope you have access to one of the various MND clinics where they offer the care and understanding of the disease.

            Best wishes,
            Barry
I’m going to do this even if it kills me!
